INDEXAnyone UK-based looking to start a fiilm collective?
5 years, 11 months ago - Dominic Stewart
Hi there,
I'm an aspiring London-based film writer/director who has written a number of short films, one of which I've actually directed/produced as well. From my experience of seeing my first project through to fruition, I was surprised by the sheer logisitcs required into getting the film finished, not to mention the financial and emotional taxation (although overall I very much loved the experience). In an industry where you often build your showreel on the job, it can feel like an overly long process.
It occurred to me that there are probably other passionate and talented individuals of various disciplines on this site looking to produce more output but who are disenfranchised/restricted by the slow production rate and high costs of these projects. Hence, I thought I'd propose that we start a film collective where we regularly collaborate together and create short films on a regular basis. The benefits of this would be:
-the opportunity to gain experience from working on a lot of projects, all of which can be added to a showreel,
-networking with other passionate and talented people looking to break the industry,
-pool of experience/resources to minimise mistakes/costs
-gaining experience of different disciplines within the industry
So if you're interested in setting something like this up, whether you're a cinematographer, sound recordist, sctor, producer, writer, director, editor, or anything in between, drop me an email and we'll have a chat.
Thanks,
Dominic

Hi Dominic. I’m a composer and often frustrated by erratic projects. I’m always interested in collaboration too. So I’m interested. That said, I’m not free until December! But I’m all about communicating both in the work and making it. I have more info at www.huw-Jones.com

Hi Dominic. I'm an editor based up in Merseyside. I am currently available as I'm finding in increasingly difficult to attract work. I've often thought it's been because of where I'm based in the country. Having said that, I'm looking for more narrative/documentary/music video work, so count me in!

Hi Dominic - I've contacted some three pitches like this and have heard nothing in return. Which is odd. I've been doing this stuff now since the early 80s and will soon be put out to grass (or some other euphemisic metaphor for ageing) so any chance of an invite from you?

Hi Dominic
Thanks for posting this. This is exactly how I feel. I am a professional actress working in film, TV and theatre. I am also a writer/director and acting coach. I have begun working on my own projects for the last 2 years but struggle in getting them off the ground as well as working as a freelance artist.
I would love to be part of a collective and support others in their work as well as gain support in my own projects. I am based in Hastings though work a lot in London. I would be very interested in speaking more about this and your work. You can see some off the stuff I get up to on http://annamarianabirye.com
Also hello to all the other creatives on this thread.
Much thought
Anna-Maria

First thing is WHERE would you organize this? Let's say it's a monthly or fortnightly meet up. Which part of London would it be in? I'm using London as a city, as like it or not, it is centre of Film & TV in the UK and attracts the most talent.
So is the meet going to be in North, South, East or West London? For those who are in South London, it's not easy to get to West, North or East London on a weeknight against rush hour and vice versa.
Therefore, I believe 3 or 4 different groups need to be held for each end of the city.
Second thing is HOW would you organize this? In a pub, a theatre? A media centre? A college space? Or a community space?
How much would it cost? A monthly fee? Nightly? Club membership?
I find having access to alcohol, soft drinks and light food tends to relax people and open them up to dialogue and creativity.
Third thing is WHAT exactly do you want to achieve?
Networking? There's plenty of events for that.
To make shorts, music videos and feature films? OK. How are they going be financed? Through crowdfunding? As a group pitching a shared project to local or specific investors? Would each member of the group utilize their specific skill and equipment for free/basic rates?
Because this is what it boils down to:
Will YOU join a group of actors and crew to make a short film or feature film for essentially nothing?
If YOU can't or won't say YES, then this whole debate is pointless....

Hi.
I have an idea for a film called "Year 3141". You often write film scripts. Would this name interest you (I'm making it obvious that 3141 is Pi). Please let me know. For me I'm very interested in starting a plot and script but I'm so new to the scene.
Normally I run small business but currently working on a lottery idea with O2, and I own some big brands.
Please contact me or help ask others about my film. Do we need much money to get started? I still don't know how this works. I only registered yesterday.

Hi Dominic, I realise I am a little late to the party here so I hope you're still reading this thread.
I'm an aspiring writer and script supervisor, looking to get as much experience as possible creating and being on set. Especially when it comes to script supervision, getting a foot in the door can be hard without a good portfolio, and as I'm fairly inexperienced in this area, being able to hone my skills as a scripty or a writer would be wonderful.

Hi Dominic, set something up through MeetUp and SP and see if people come. Name a date and location in London and see who turns up. Try and invite any professional filmmakers you know to deliver a presentation or Q&A.
There is a clear interest, so take some action, man!
