INDEXApproaching Funding
1 year, 7 months ago - Jess Owen
I'm new to filmmaking and want to learn more about film funding. I know I have to build up more of a CV before being a filmmaker who will get funded. But I wondered if anyone can give tips on film funds I should be aware of or avoid? I saw a few funds, like Genera and First Flights, charge filmmakers a fee to apply to the fund. Is it normal to have to pay for the chance to apply to a fund?
Thanks
Jess

My personal view is that 'funds' that charge a fee to apply are exploitative - avoid. Unfortunately there are fewer UK-based funds than there used to be. Making contact with the BFI's network of film hubs can be a good first step. It both puts you in the running for their own funds but can be a good place to hear about other initiatives.https://www.bfi.org.uk/get-funding-support/bring-film-wider-audience/bfi-film-audience-network/find-your-local-film-hub

We have workshops year around online. Here is a recording of one such workshop that is on that very subject. https://youtu.be/Ur2BO4p1EV0?si=DAQk7fKWAXKxMxuW
