Architect seeking advice.

6 years, 11 months ago - Benedetta Borelli

Hi,

I am an architect, with 7 years experience designing and running projects at all stages. I feel my experience in managing the design process, from concept to construction, could be combined with my passion for cinema. I have been thinking about a career shift over the last year and I was considering roles such as location manager or set designer.
To start with, I would like to offer my expertise for a short film. Has anyone got any suggestion?

Thank you

Benedetta

Hi Benedetta,

While I’m more on the actor side of the camera typically, I bet there’ll be lots of people interested in your skills and experience. What you can do would totally be transferable. I would love to chat to you further about one such project! Perhaps we can message one another?

Best
Angela

Hi Benedetta - From long ago I have an architecture degree, and I've also managed a couple of builds as developer. If you want to use your project management skills in film, you'd head for the production management side of things. You might have to start as a production assistant and work up, but an ability to coordinate a diverse team is a valuable transferable skill.

If you want to use your design talent, the parallel is more with theatrical set design. Films don't have set designers as such, they have art departments and production designers who are more often concerned with mise-en-scene and dressing a set, than designing it from scratch. Studio filming might have more creativity, but I wouldn't say it's usually high level design (unless it's science fiction!). Gaming is a huge growth area for someone with spatial design skills, as I'm sure you're aware.

Good luck!

Don't mess about. Direct. One of my oldest friends is an architect and we often talk about the surprising number of similarities in our work. Both in the opportunities to express an artistic vision of life that can bring a public benefit and in the number of obstacles both practical, financial and usually chiefly from the limits of our client's expectations.

The main difference is cinema's lack of a coherent and well enforced health and safety policy...

much love

Ben please elaborate on the health and safety policy question: what is lacking?
