Are there any Directors in London who would be interested in classes in working with Actors?

8 years, 8 months ago - Rahul Nag

Hello,

I am an Actor based in London.

I have noticed here on Shooting People in a recent thread and also from meeting Directors that there are Directors who would like more experience and practice working with Actors.

Especially to do this In a non-pressured environment where there is time and space to talk and try things out rather than on set where you have lots of other things to focus on, and not a lot of time to get things right.

So, I would like to know:

1. Is there interest from Directors in training in working with Actors?
2. What are the key things you would like to learn or practice in such training?
3. What kinds of formats and times would work best for you?

Please could you fill out this survey I have put together:
http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/3238682/Directing-Actors-Survey-For-Directors

If there is strong enough interest in this, then I can look at setting something up working both with actors from Shooting People and other actors I know

So please fill in the survey if you are interested and I will get back to you if there is enough interest.

Thanks,

Rahul

This will give me a better understanding of what your needs are and what you are looking for with learning how to better and more effectively work with actors.

Thanks,

Rahul

Hi Rahul,

This sounds like a really interesting idea...

What kind of feedback did you get from your survey?
It would be great to get something like this up and running!

Hi Xenia,

Thanks for replying.

Unfortunately I had a limited response in terms of numbers. And those who did reply said they don't have the budget to pay for the things I would need to set this up e.g. room hire, actors' time etc.

Do you have any ideas or thoughts on getting something like this up and running and what it could look like?

I set up a Wednesday group with a group of actor friends when I was at London film school. The room was free because I was a student, so no-one had to pay for anything except travel into covent garden. I had worked with some of the actors in theatre, so establishing working parameters was straightforward.

We worked on improvisation techniques, scenes from plays, work I or some of the actors were developing and practiced exercises such as Meisner technique. I think it is really helpful for actors and directors to participate in these sort of classes if the people running them have some experience. If you don't get enough people, it might be worth signing up to do a workshop with a good theatre company. For example, I am doing a workshop with Frantic Assembly next weekend as a way to refresh my directing skills.
