INDEXAs a younger video editor, can anyone give any advice on how to stand out and how to prove that I can be professional?

As a younger person in the industry, I feel like I'm easily dismissed and I know that I have the talent and a portfolio that displays that but everything is always going great, they love my work etc... and then I tell them my age and it immediately creates radio silence. Any help?

At UK trailer house Synchronicity – http://www.synchronicityfilm.co.uk – we don't discriminate on the basis of age. Send your showreel to david@synchronicityii.co.uk and I promise to watch without prejudice!

How old are you? Where are you based? TBH the most common route into high end editing is to start as a runner in a production company or advertsiing agency. Then show them your stuff once you've got to know whos-who. Then you'll be an edit assistant, or junior producer, then start cutting the real jobs. Just to go from old in the wild to directly working on jobs only happens occationally, it's all about people, connections, etc. But location can be a big barrier, and now we have covid also! Keep trcuking mate, I'm sure you'll get there.

Age can be a barrier if nothing else just because people will want to see that you have the experience to be able to, for instance, manage a full post production workflow, and authority to manage subcontractors, etc. As you know, editing is much more than using the software, it's being a creative storyteller with the material you have. If you're (say) 16, people might assume your worldly knowledge is a lot more limited than at (say) 36 or whatever, and that worldliness has an intrinsic value.

Are you sure you're not overestimating the level of your work/Talent? ive never heard of an editor being discriminated against based on age. Its usually an attitude issue.

It sounds new to me that people discriminate because someone is too young. If anything, it usually happens the opposite. But if that happened to you, don't get discouraged, because you've just been unlucky. Many times, though, choices are not driven by age but by the impression you give, a spark that is maybe missing. That is something that you acquire with experience and time, you just don't need to rush.
Anyway, if you like to share some of your work or your showreel, I am sure you will get honest and useful feedback from your fellow editors here on SP.

Just keep editing! Keep learning and put yourself in every position you can to get out there, eventually, someone will give you a chance! My first break came was I got an interview for an interview as a VT editor for Big Brother....I didn't get the job! A few weeks later the chap called me back and asked if I'd like to cut some small social media pieces for them....just keep plugging!!
