INDEXAudition Space
10 years ago - Holly Jacobson
I'm wondering if any Manchester filmmakers can help me. I've moved here fairly recently and now that I need to audition for a short film I don't know the best place to look for audition space. When I lived in Leicester the local arts cinema was kind enough to give me free space to hold auditions and I'm really hoping to find another venue that is open to supporting a young filmmaker by offering free/ low rate space. Any recommendations would be really helpful. Thank you, Holly x

I've never actually heard of Plowden's theory - but I can take a guess that you're concerned about "socialisation". This is almost always the first thing people ask about when they hear that I'm home educated - "but what about socialisation?" It's weird really because I think home ed kids have great skills on average - we tend to be confident and able to talk to anyone and of any age. I think this that being out in the 'real world' is a more natural way to learn social skills - and this way I make friends based on mutual interests and mutual respect - as opposed to just who happens to born within a few months of me and lives around the corner. Thank you for your comments and compliments x

Your school should be very keen to help you out. These days all schools have a strong (though pretty much largely ignored) remit to do "community" stuff.
For legal reasons they'd need an adult around but I can't see any drama teacher worth their salt not agreeing to give you a Saturday afternoon, and then see how it goes.

Outside of school times adults don't need CRB. Many schools have adult education, sports clubs etc afterwards. That's why I suggested a Saturday.
School room/hall hire is often very cheap and easily available. An underused resource.
That said, if the local theatre has a studio, that might be worth asking about. Pub function rooms can also be cheap/free esp on weekend afternoons. So long as they don't run a bar in them, age rules aren't usually a problem.

Home-educated kids often have a huge headstart as is evident for Holly, seems to have a maturity beyond her years on these boards at least!

I stand corrected Holly and as a former teacher I should have known that! You're obviously a very able and literate young woman, my only caveat being that you're missing out on other aspects of education. I seem to remember an acronym from the Plowden days - S.E.P.I or P.I.E.S or whatever you wanted to make it the point being that the initials represent the four major aspects of education and all (in Plowden's theory at least) are of equal importance i.e. social, emotional, physical and intellectual. But I'm guessing you've heard this before! Of course in practice the last is the one the average person regards as what education is principally about. But anyway good luck in whatever you choose to do.

Hi Holly - given the 'youthfulness' of your headshot I was curious, so looked up your profile. You're 13 for god's sake! Why aren't you at school? Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it illegal?

Hi Allan - I'm actually not 13 until after Christmas! No it's not illegal Allan - school is something that parents opt into for their children in this country and it isn't compulsory (although if you are registered at a school and don't attend then you are in trouble). It is only education that is compulsory, not school :)
I'm actually making a documentary about home education at the moment and I can send you a link to see it when it's done if you like - although it will be a long while yet.

I don't actually go to school Marlom (I've never been), but that would have been a good idea. It might be a problem that I would be auditioning adults who haven't been cleared to be in a school etc.
One problem I can have is credibility because of my age so if possible I like to use a space that isn't associated as being "for children".
