INDEXBad dubbing...
6 years, 5 months ago - Alex Churchyard
We want to emulate bad dubbing often seen in Italian horror movies - but also seen in many English language films as well. The Editor (2014) was a Canadian film that managed to do this really well.
Just want to figure out how we make it sound like a deliberate choice and not a technical issue - so it appears clearly dubbed and not just that the audio has become out of sync...
Any suggestions would be appreciated...

Some suggestions:
1. Obviously the timing should be out, but also the direction of the dubbing actor's voice. So stress, inflection and timing can be different than that done on screen.
2. Using some slightly different words than the actor on screen, even just one different word, can help make it clear that it's a "bad dub"
Out of interest is this for a comedic effect or something different? If it's comedy, Kung Pow did an amazing job of bad dubbing, even overdubbing a dog barking and getting the timing insanely wrong.

Thanks Barry. Yeah somewhat for comedy effect - its a comedy horror and also just to emulate the style of those films. Just seems quite hard to achieve without looking like its just a mistake. There's something about the way even things like Kung Pow actually sound...

If I remember rightly there was also a lo-fi effect on a lot of the dialogue in Kung Pow. A kind of scratchy, hissy sound, not enough to be annoying but enough to make it sound like it was old.
There's a free plugin called Vinyl by iZotope that might help with making that effect.
Other than that I guess it's like anything in comedy - it's down to timing. If you did everything "badly" then it loses its humour, you need to make sure it's used at the best times.

iZotope was a godsend for our film Suburban Coffin - really highlighted the retro vibes !
