INDEXBest camera to shoot at night with?
10 years, 10 months ago - Holly Wilkinson
Hello Shooters,
I am shooting a music video at night, and i wanted to know what is the best camera to shoot with? I will be using good lighting to light the set, but i just don't want to have any grain in the finished film. I don't have a huge budget, so please bare that in mind when recommending a camera. I would love to hear any suggestions from Shooters, so please get in touch!
Thanks,
Holly

Something with a largish sensor and fast glass. That's not typically a cheap combination - much cheaper to increase the light levels! Anyway, on a budget, rent a 5D and some decent primes - I think that'll give you the most leeway for least money.

Actually that A7S footage is rather impressive, not often you see people shoot 'night for day', usually the other way round!

A7S - Just watch out for significant rolling shutter if you are moving the camera fast or doing shaky cam!

Second the A7S stone of the footage shot on moonlight around now is amazing.

If you can't find an A7s to rent and don't want to have to deal with the limitations of a super small camera body with limited lens options (unless you rent one with a decent lens adapter) I'd suggest the C100/C300 family of cameras. If you're lighting your shoot anyway you don't need to be able to shoot in 'moonlight' and I've had decent low light results with the c300 at ISO 3200 and above. I doubt honestly you'd need anything above that if you are using lights - I can get a decent image out of my 5D MK3 at 1600 ISO under street lights - and the C300 has the advantage of being 50mb broadcast quality straight out of the box, which you might want if you're planning to send the video to music channels. I haven't had enough of a chance to test the A7s image for noise myself but if you are worried about grain the c300 certainly produces one of the most 'filmic' looking noise patterns I've seen - far more aesthetically pleasing than the grain from something like a 5D or even the Red Epic.

Sony A7S--by far best DSLR-type camera for low-light, and one of the best period.
