Best cameras and equipment for a low budget learner?

13 years, 3 months ago - Dan Robb

I am soon going to be shooting some short, comedic films and my head is spinning from all the research I have done on what camera to buy/use (camcorder/DSLR?) and how best to capture sound. I want the shorts to look and sound good but my budget is small. Does anyone have any tips on equipment for ambitious newbies such as myself?

Nowadays you can really get very nice kit and amazing image quality for very little money.

a DSLR like Canon 600/650D or Panasonic GH2 is a good place to start if you're on a tight budget. For lenses, go for vintage manual ones rather than, much more expensive, modern ones. There are so many amazing manual photo lenses out there at crazy cheap prices.

For your tripod, shoulder rig and accessories, eBay is a good place. I buy most of my own gear there, cameras, lenses, tripods, monitors, batteries, everything. And in last few years I must have saved £2k at least.

Check out http://www.budgetfilmmaker.co.uk/

You'll find a lot of budget film-making gear reviews and vintage lens tests there.

Hope this helps,
