Best way to write and pitch a TV series?

9 years, 5 months ago - Michael Chandler

I've been developing a TV series - a bit of an ambitious project which I'm very excited about (6 episodes in the first season). However I'm a bit stuck as to what my next steps should be.
I've developed a 'bible' for the series, but don't know what comes next - do I go to try and pitch the idea before writing the whole script; do I write the whole thing before pitching - basically how developed does it need to be before sharing it with potential production companies? AND who in the industry should I take it to?
All a bit chicken and egg at this stage, so any and all thoughts appreciated!

Hi Michael

I'm currently developing a TV series with a mentor who has advised me to write the pilot then the other 5 episodes as one page outlines as a safeguard in case the idea isn't taken up. Better to use the time that would be spent on writing and editing 6 episodes to develop a couple of other series ideas (pilot and outline) you can have ready for when you secure a meeting with a TV producer - be that at the London Screenwriter Festival or wherever. You don't want to waste that opportunity with just one idea in your hand. All the best, Bob

There is a huge yearly pitch competition to 300 european commissioners in France. Just up now. Its free, but you have to preferably have some finance already, but not absolutely necessary. What someone told me who owns 15 tv channnels is that tv are desperate for new ideas so this is the time of tv. I am also developing ideas. Like you dont really know how to go forward completely so also interested in any answers that help on here.

Great advice, thanks Bob and Jane.
Bob- out of interest, how did you find and secure a mentor? Been thinking of doing something similar myself recently.

Thanks again
