BFI Short Film Fund - Who's Applying?

2 years, 4 months ago - Xenia Glen

Hi everyone,

I just thought I'd start a conversation here for anyone who is planning to apply to the BFI NETWORK short film fund (which I think opens next month)...

https://network.bfi.org.uk/news-and-features/industry-insights/bfi-network-short-film-funding

I might be applying with a VR project if I can wrangle the work together in time to submit!

It would be really interesting to hear what type of projects other Shooters are submitting with? And if you need to build a team to apply with, this is the place to find collaborators.

Xenia :)

I'd like to. But I'm going to guess it's only for UK citizens?

Isn't it for producers based in England?

I have applied so many times and pretty tired of the rejection. That being said If there is a package in place with a producer and writer I would be very interested coming on as a director.

Hi,

I'd love to apply with my short film as Writer/Director. Currently seeking a Producer.

It's a 'dark comedy', two locations, x3 cast, two '2 handers' and could be shot in two days.

Please message if you're interested in hearing more.

Thank you and good luck everyone!

Just found out I'm a Bluecat Quarter Finalist, so... I'm looking into it - but will need a Producer.

Script is Life Eternal
It's a radical re-think of Orpheus journeying to the Underworld in search of Eurydice, a muse on immortality and a story of what this might mean for love.

Bluecat Reader Review below (notes on improvements have been applied to bring the Orpheus idea more apparent).

What did you like about this script?
I think your descriptive writing skills are fantastic, and the settings and scenery that you are so effectively able to portray were a pleasure to read. Your setting descriptions were vivid and powerful, and often written in such creative and artistic ways that evoked the power, the elegance, and the beauty of the various locations in this short film. For example, I loved how you painted the crashing of the waves; the mixtures of light and dark, your use of multisensory details (from visuals to sound to some extent even feeling and touch), and the varied sentence structure added many interesting layers to these paragraphs. For example, I loved how you balanced the flooding lights with the crashing waves (a great bit of clever wordplay), and then followed by the simply written, “Just white. Silence.” which delivered a shocking punch to the senses. Writing like this grabbed me and made engaging with the story all the easier.

I enjoyed the dialogue within this short film as well. I think the mysterious and slightly haunting or ominous mood that you establish through the setting is reflected in the dialogue as well, and by paralleling and matching these two elements, your script reads as much more cohesive, clearer, and in the end, more entertaining as a whole. This mystery was amplified by the many short sentences you injected into some of the descriptive paragraphs. I really enjoyed these little interjections, and I think they carried a lot of weight in terms of establishing tone and rhythm throughout your script. Additionally, I found it quite easy to connect with Mary and Grandma (despite the names, which I note below), and I never found myself too confused or too lost in the main narrative or plot of the film.

What do you think needs work?
Although I appreciate the fact that you might have been trying to maintain some amount of ambiguity with your characters by leaving their names as Passenger or Grandma, you might consider assigning a few more specific names to some of your more central characters. For example, the transition from “Older Woman” to “Grandma” adds a little, but not a lot in the grand scheme of our understanding. It does help clarify her relationship to Mary, but it still puts us at a distance between her and the Passenger. Additionally, I don’t think I fully understood the benefit of leaving the Passenger unnamed.

By the end, I was wondering if Passenger might have been a symbol for Death or the Grim Reaper. If this is so, I think you might be able to include a few more slight nods or hints towards this end just to ensure your point is delivered. If not, then it might be worth clarifying otherwise as well.

I’d like to apply but I’m a first time filmmaker although I have an experienced mentor. I want to apply as writer/director (I’m an experienced theatre director) but need a producer on board. I’ve written a short comedy, have actors, locations, need crew. Very excited to be doing this. I’d prefer a female team so if any producers are out there who love a strange comic script, please get in touch!

Hi Xenia and All,

I'm a writer/director with a script. I've put an ad up on here and am looking for a producer to collaborate with. If anyone would like to discuss, please drop me a message! Thanks :)

LIFE SETENCE is an emotive live action drama that covers topical social issues (crime, mental health).

I anticipate it being able to be shot on the lower-end of the funding range as it’s mostly set in a house with two characters.
