Blurred Lines - Does Pop have a Misogyny Problem?

11 years, 2 months ago - Radar Music Videos

Hi Shooters,
This is actually the title of a discussion we're having as part of The Great Escape convention this weekend, details below.
But I thought it might be an interesting discussion to have here too. So let's focus that a little more - is sexism in music videos so normalised we have to accept that's just the way most people like it?
What do you think?
Some students I was talking to recently think sexist representations aren't a big deal and just part of a multiplicity of options out there.
I wonder what it'll take to shift sexist representations in pop particularly and whether it can ever happen.

I'll post back here after The Great Escape discussion & let you know key points - but if you can come, do, and say hello :)

Blurred Lines - Does Pop have a Misogyny Problem?
The Great Escape, Brighton
Sat 10th May 1.30pm
The ‘Blurred Lines’ contoversy also kick-started a debate about music videos online, and the accessibility of more explicit pop promos to younger viewers. Are labels and video directors increasingly guilty of employing a ‘sex sells’ (or ‘NSFW generates clicks’) approach to ensure maximum YouTube views? And if so, does that matter, both creatively and socially?

Promising a fizzing discussion about trends in music video making and porn, including sexism, feminism and the rise of 'ethical porn' will be:
Phil Tidy: prolific producer, including collaboration with Diane Martel director of the eponymous Blurred Lines
Craig Haynes: content manager for the massive dubstep channel UKF
Jerry Bartlett: founder of 'Sex and Censorship' dedicated to freedom of expression
De La Muerta aka Deborah Scanlan and Elizabeth Adams, regular directors for Kyla La Grange, Lulu James and Chloe Howl

Nice one thanks Nick. Those posts have an amazing amount of people commenting.

The real life panel wasn't anything like so contentious - because everyone was there in person so no anonymous input. Plus we were all broadly liberal! Having said that, there were interesting differences of opinion, eg over exploitation vs empowerment, why does Miley Cyrus have to explain herself (this from younger women). And many interesting insights about the porn scene from Jerry. Key moments are going to be written up by the organisers CMU, so will post that when it's published.

Here's the write up - it's a quick read and some excellent points made by panel members - would love to hear thoughts from shooters - what do you think about sexism in music videos? what do you think about the proposed BBFC censorship scheme? Would it affect your viewing habits? http://www.completemusicupdate.com/article/pop-misogyny-debate-turns-to-music-videos-empowerment-and-porn-at-the-great-escape/
