C-Stands - where do YOU sandbag?

2 months, 3 weeks ago - Niki Jones

So I’ve been filming solo recently and I've been trying to finally put this one to bed…

With C-stands – three legs, right? One’s always taller?

WHICH LEG DO YOU PUT THE SANDBAG ON? I’ve always gone for the tallest. Feels like you’re using the full weight of the bag, and it just… makes sense?

But then I started asking around and things got philosophical fast. SO - where do you put yours? Tall leg? Opposite the arm? Wherever it looks coolest?

Let’s settle this before I tape a sandbag to each leg and call it art.

If the sandbag touches the ground on the low legs, then yes, you are losing some of the effective ballast weight... unless the stand is knocked and that leg rises, lifting the sandbag off the ground, in which case the bag might suddenly be in the best position to provide a low centre of gravity of the bag-stand combination.

On the higher leg, the bag may not touch the ground, but the centre of gravity of the stand / bag combo is higher than on the low legs (disregarding aforementioned possible touching the ground issue with the low legs), meaning it's less stable. HOWEVER, a bag that is touching the ground might slip off the leg if the stand is nudged / moved, due to the friction between the bag and the floor keeping the bag in place while the leg moves.

OVERALL, I think it would probably be better to place it on the higher leg if that means it never touches the ground. The difference in the location of the centre of gravity between the two positions is probably quite minor, and is probably overshadowed by the problems associated with a bag that touches the floor.

I would put it around the centre post facing away from the high leg which should be facing the talent, too easy for a bag to slide off a leg

The C-Stand is a cantilever support system. The large leg MUST be orientated under the supported flag/object, making a C formation. The bag goes on the large leg close as possible to the post. All other bags should WRAP the post.

Here endeth the lesson. Grip-101
