Can anyone recommend a good documentary course?

9 years, 7 months ago - Sukey Richardson

I'd like to do a relatively short documentary course, 4-8 weeks and there are a few (Raindance, Met, NFTS, UCL). Would like to hear form anyone who's been on them and hear their feedback.

Thanks!

I did the Documentary Foundation Certificate course at Raindance and I would definitely recommend it.
The next one is being run on five Wednesday evenings, starting February 24th, 6.30-9.00pm.
You can find loads more info on www.raindance.org under 'courses'.
I love their courses because they are all taught by people who are currently working in their specialised fields, so everything is up to date and their tutors are enthusiastic, encouraging and inspirational.

That Raindance course looks perfect and relatively cheap. Any idea if it sells out any time soon or is it usually ok to wait?

Hi Lee. The courses are usually very popular and well attended.
You could email them at courses@raindance.co.uk and find out how many spaces are left now.

Hi Lee,
My advice after you do a small course would be to gain as much experience as possible, for me that was the best of all courses, I did an MA in documentary making and it guided me but actually by shooting short and long documentaries I have learned much more, it is a never ending learning path, also by watching documentaries you learn a lot.
A good book on the subject is Directing the Documentary by Rabiger.
Good luck, all the best,
Adeline.

Hi! I come from the UCL Practical Documentary (a term long) and I found it really good. It is a "bang for the buck" considering some other courses out there and, in my case, it led to freelance work straight away. Since then I've been freelancing for years with no need of another day job. Sure, I might just got lucky - but still I think the course was really good. It is advertised as for beginners but I really think you can get the most of it if you have a previous knowledge of the matter - when I started the course I had years of self-teaching that I could structure just because I was taking the course. I am not sure of how the course evolved now that they also have a MA there, but I am sure it is still a very good one. Hope it helped!
