Can anyone recommend a wireless lapel microphone system?

11 years, 10 months ago - Steve Deery

Looking to buy a wireless lapel microphone system. It will be used in door and outside. The prices seem to range widely. If anyone can offer a little guidance that would be great.

Hi Steve.....
Indeed prices vary hugely, from £500 to £3k.... Obviously with higher prices, higher quality audio and range, top ones use digital technology. So really depends what your budget is.... A good entry level system that is popular with many budget film makers is the Sennhesier G3 system, its good value for money and half decent audio quality. Upgrading the stock mics that come with them, to dpa's or sanken will also deliver higher quality audio, but would be an extra £250 on top... Make sure if you buy 2nd hand ones get the new radio frequencies for UK with is channel 38....

I'd second the above two replies. The Sennhiser G3 system works well and is excellent value for money but the mic that comes with it is the weak point. Again I endorse the Tram. Rode personal mics (lavalier and PinMic) are worth a look, but the Tram is better. There's also a Sony system at the same price level as the G3 which is getting good reviews, but anything cheaper is just going to be trouble. Second hand Micron or Audio are another possibility (high quality broadcast-standard kit) but, as had been mentioned above, check the frequencies are legal.

I'd agree with Andrej and add the Tram TR 50 microphone. And Rycote stickies with big furry wind baffles to stop clothes rustle, even inside. With these babies you don't need a boom.

If you are on a budget., this is what I use.
I have a couple of Zoom H1 Handy recorders http://www.amazon.co.uk/Zoom-Handy-Recorder-24bit-microSD/dp/B0042UGFVW together with a Hama Lavalier Microphone http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hama-LM-09-Clip-On-Omnidirectional-Microphone/dp/B00006JB4R/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1380537599&sr=1-1&keywords=hama+lavalier
Super cheap, works great for me.
I just pop the zoom recorders in the person's pocket , together with the lapel cables etc, put the zoom on lock, simple. You can't change the levels as you are recording, but a bit of trial and error and you will figure it out.
