Can anyone recommend an alleyway in London that could double as one from 50's USA? Thanks!

Alleyway need for 50's noire/spy thriller short film. I mustn't look modern, it must have a grimy and gritty look so it resembles the kind of place where Cold War spy's would meet to do their dirty deeds.

Try the "Huguenot buildings" around Fournier Street off Brick Lane. They have a distinctive, foreign look that sometime remind me of older parts of New York. There are only about 6 streets with this look but they are intriguing (and have probably been used by TV films many times).

Hi guys, thanks for your great replies. Really appreciate them! I've forwarded them on to the film's director (I'm writing/producing on this one), but if anyone has any more suggestions then please do get in touch :)

One or two off the north side of Fleet st might be suitable or round Aldgate where Jack the Ripper hung out. If you do find somewhere good, please add it to my pet project for a locations/props database on shootingpeople which they said they are going to put on the website which will hopefully include reference photos.

The Cold War spies of Cheltenham were said to much prefer our elegant Regency streets and cafe's to grimy alleys :-)

Serious answer - go scouting a suitable neighbourhood on a bicycle. You'll find more alleys and backstreets than you ever thought existed.

I speak from experience location scouting in Gloucester a couple weeks ago. I wasn't looking for alleys in particular, just a wide variety of possible locations, and alleys were more common than expected. I think our brains just edit them out in normal life.

The bike is so you go slowly enough to see everything, and get into places that cars can't.

Other answer - is the "dirty doings in dark alleys" a trope that you really should follow, or one that it would be more fun overturning?
