INDEXCan anyone recommend any drama groups or acting classes to join?

Hi All,
Been thinking recently of doing some stage-acting again. Last time I really did this was back in school :$, but was something I always got a lot of good feedback for, and which I used to really enjoy.
So at this point, and also after years of watching Rocky Horror and wanting to be a part of something like that (sort of) I am just looking for some sort of society or amateur drama/theatre group I might be able to join, or even something like an acting class where I can gain some training as part of a group with a view to staging a play? MUST be based in London!!
I know there are tons and tons of acting coaches and classes in and around London, but I am just looking for what might be right for me: someone who has done it before with good end results, but hasn't really done a lot of acting over the years...
Anyway if anyone knows of anything or can point me in the right direction that would be amazing!
All the best and looking forward to your responses!

I would advise going to The Actors Centre - actors centre.co.uk 1A Tower Street WC2H 9NP
If you take a look at most of the Film Actors or Stage Actors they all will have undergone some form of training. Acting is just like any other job you need training. No athlete would decide to take part in a Pentathlon unless they'd trained for it. The actor has to REPEAT emotions and words - that needs training to make it seem as Hamlet says 'Fresh Minted in the Brain'.

If you're within travelling distance of Ealing then go to Questors - see Zak's link above. Very likely to be what you're looking for.

Have you had a look in the online training directory, sometimes organisations post deals in there, and you can search by length and date of the courses. www.shootingpeople.org/directory

Hi Ian, check out www.actorstemple.com they do an intro to acting week and other courses too. I went there and learnt a lot about acting (and about being a human). Also keep an eye out for Bathsheba Garnet's classes in London, she does some at the Actors Centre and some privately...again inspirational teaching for the brave. Hope you find a class that suits you!

Hi Ian
You should check out www.theactorsclass.co.uk It is a recently new class that has been set up a very successful actress friend of mine. Unlike the Actors Centre you don't have to have a professional credit to join but the training is equally as good. Through Mary's work as an actress she has extensive contacts in the Acting world all of whom support the class which is held weekly at the wonderful Courtyard Theatre, Simon Callow and Janie Dee to name a few! You can also find them on facebook http://www.facebook.com/theactorsclass?fref=ts and twitter @theactorsclass. Let me know how you get on.
Good Luck!!

you can spend a lot of time and money n become a trained actor which is ideal. but u say u want a class to join. well you're already in one. it's called life. for film the best place to start is to say to yourself, 'what if this was me in this situation.' then do it FOR REAL (stunts n fights excepted). 'character' is just a perception by the audience of a string of true events a person does. how they do them is determined by their personal history together with the context of the action and what they need from some one else. be true to each and every moment n a character will emerge. dont play emotions. find something which provokes something in you. emotions are reactions to real things. u can have thoughts or do things including speaking. get into the headspace of the character n think see and do as they do, as if it were you. simply and truthfully. mistrust an director who gives emotions or expressions to do. read 'Directing Actors' by Judith Weston. it's a director's guide but includes so much about acting it ought to be called 'how to act on screen'. good luck!!!

I recommend that you go to The City Literary Institute in Covent Garden, affectionately known as The City Lit. You will have all your needs met there. Look them up on the internet and phone the Drama Dept. Experts courses and expert teachersat subsidised prices. Break a leg. Irene

The Actors Centre in Covent Garden has never dissappointed me. I've been to a number of classes there over the past 2 years and every single one of them has been exceptional. They do an introduction to acting course I believe.
