INDEXCan anyone recommend any short-term courses for aspiring producers in UK

Hi shooters.
I have worked as a writer/director, random projects, film and theatre. Today I feel I want to set up my company and be a producer. What would be the best course to do in UK to give you the qualification, ensure networking and provide the chance to set your foot on the door. Any shooter's ideas as how to make this step will be much appreciated

Definitely echo John's suggestion. Stephen Follows is amazing and has a wealth of industry knowledge. You'll probably learn more from reading his blogs in just a week then actually doing any course on producing :)
Christine Hartland runs Mosaic Networking (free event) which takes place every few months and there are always lots of established producers at those events. You could probably network with them too and ask how they got their experience.

Thanks everyone who responded here and apologies for the delay.
I'll be starting the Raindance course as most immediate. Any shooter's going? Would be great to make contact live there

There is no qualification beyond actually doing it, however Raindance run/book a number of crash courses that'll take you a weekend or several evenings

Thanks Peter. Franz, I can find no courses at Pinewood, how are they advertised and how do I join the Lunch Club? Sounds like a top suggestion! Cheers.

I hate the way you can't edit here! I meant to say "I really miss..." Dang!

Richard Holmes - who has produced a number of successful features, runs a one day course which is brilliant

Hi Iliya, not sure how much depth you want to go into but Film Oxford do a weekend course http://www.filmoxford.org/course/film-producing-on-a-microbudget/ which might be a useful start. I've done a few of their courses over the years and they've all been good, plus they're not expensive.

Paddy, Jonathan, John, David! Thank you very much for this. All helpful clues to investigate. Yes, Karel, "financial mismanagement ". isn't it hilarious?! Is there no Producers Alliance these days?

http://www.raindance.org/ would be the best place. They do many individual classes on all aspects of filmmaking, plus series of classes, a fast-track route, and now they do a custom designed MA in filmmaking (meaning you can design your own curriculum and focus on producing, setting up a company, etc). The MA is in association with Staffordshire University. Overall, great classes, great tutors, affordable prices, and they are right next to Charing Cross Station/Trafalgar Square.

Also get and learn MM Budgeting and Scheduling which will sit happily with your Final Draft. Courses are run at Pinewood. For top professional networking (ie features) join the Lunch Club. We meet once a month at Hush (Bond St) and it's organised by Gareth who runs Roger Moore's Pinewood office. It's mainly for producers but we get a few directors, writers and actors along plus showbiz accountants and lawyers. Just remember - "Showbusiness" is 1/3 Show and 2/3 Business!

Have a good read through the Advertising Producers Association website for an overview (it's not just a resource for advertising producers) They also run a course http://www.a-p-a.net/masterclass

Ilya - goto http://www.sargent-disc.com/ as John Sargent is the top production accountant at Pinewood and became the UK rep for Movie Magic years ago. They now run training courses there.

I really the New Producers Alliance. Some great courses and networking opportunities.
Isn't it time that was revived? (It folded due to financial mismanagement - typical producers eh?) Any one here want to to do that? You'd certainly get funding from all kinds of industtry bodies.
