Hi,
Can anyone tell me what's a good camera under £250 TO BUY for shooting short films? I've been looking at the Sony Handycam CX190, Nikon D3100 Digital SLR and the JVC GC-XA1 ADIXXION Action Camera among others.

Are they any good or should consider others?

Matthew,

yes DSlR are good certainly as current trends go. I think lower rental price I came across was about £90 the EX3 from sony is pretty cheap rental wise under £150 a day depends on what and how long you need it for??? DSLR's pretty even in quality but personally slightly more in favour of RED / Alexa quality but hope that useful in your search!!!

Best Regards

This is a bit of a mute question really. For £250 I would not buy a camera. The quality will be awful. You may as well use your mobile phone. Rent a DV or small format HD camera and put the rest into the budget for the production - the onscreen production values. This is actors, design, locations, costumes, sound, or even distribution.

There is far too much enmphasis these days to shoot on high end kit when the production values have been left out of the equation... Pay your actors and crew and you'll get far more value than a £250 camera could ever offer.

Now, if you where talking about £2,500 or more...!

I'd say you've given yourself a pretty tight budget there. I would avoid the Adixxion as this has a pretty limited super wide angle lens (as most action cameras do). The Sony will be east to shoot with and give you a decent image, as would any HD camcorder - but you won't get the "filmy" look of DSLR shooting if you want that. The D3100 is good, but for £250 you would only get the body - you'll need a bunch of lenses - more like £300 with an 18-55 lens. The advantage of DSLR is you can upgrade the lenses as you go, and get a better body later as well. Disadvantage is they're not so easy to shoot with. Have a quick look at these two films, which conveniently both start in the bedroom, though lit very differently - this one shot on an HD camcorder (Canon HG-10) http://vimeo.com/9214881 and this one shot on a Canon 550D (similar to Nikon) http://vimeo.com/36757212
