Can I submit an animation short to competitions if it has already been released online?

Hi

I am currently making an animation short and hoping to begin entering it in competitions from the 1st March.

I have looked at several submission rules for short film competitions and am still no clearer as to if I can enter the film in to competitions if I have already released the film online (you tube).

This is my first animation short and would like to release to you tube to get an immediate response to the film, but it I don't want to jepordize any chances that it may have of being screened in competitions.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

Thanks,

Nick

By and large, festival programmers will enjoy thinking they're the ones who 'discovered' you, and the audience want to pay to see something new.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say festivals that don't request this are probably not going to be particularly great festivals.

There will be some fests who insist on premiership or unavailable online. At the Short Sighted event a few years back, they explained that this was becoming more rare, except for the cream of the festival crop.

Over the last year, I had 60+ submissions for festivals with the film already online. Only one objected and another requested it be unavailable for the festival duration. It's best to pull together your festival strategy, approach them and find out their policy on this.
