Can we stop using DIT when we mean Data Wrangler?

Hands up, I've been sucked into this misnomer on set but I'd like to ask if we (the community) can stop using the jobs DIT & Data Wrangler synonymously? Particularly on job postings.

While one may be contained within the other, they are not the same job - a DIT is a trained & highly skilled worker with specific technical tasks to accomplish, as well as being a useful camera technician (I'm not going to outline the job - look it up). A Data Wrangler is there to ensure all rushes are at least double backed & error checked (not putting down the data wranglers out there, but honestly it's not as skilled a job as DIT).

It's not the biggest problem in our industry for sure, but seeing job postings that say 'ideally you will be a 2nd AC and DIT' seems absurd to me.

I know it's just a name and to be fair, is only a minor bugbear of mine - but the more clarity we can give to things such as this should help lead us away from disappointment and confusion - especially in an industry that so often has to prove it's resilience.

People use terms erroneously all the time - for instance they advertise for a 'producer' where they mean 'financier' or 'mug with deep pockets' ;-)

True indeed - would be nice to try to slow the proliferation of these misunderstood roles. Maybe SP should have a rule - if you're advertising a job, you should at least understand what you're asking for. Might encourage people to learn something new they wouldn't otherwise know? Not to mention help their relationships further down the line when they know the rights questions to ask and requests to make...
