I have been looking into buying a Canon XHG1 - does anyone have any experience shooting with one, any tips?

I have a couple XHA1's which is virtually the same. It's a good camera, the downside is the small LCD screen, but the eyepiece is good. You can get a WDH 72 wide angle adapter on ebay, and the 20x zoom comes in handy. It's a mini DV tape cam, but if like me, you prefer that, then cool. As has been said above, make sure you have good lighting, script, and actors and you are away.

It'll do a decent job. Frankly ANY modern camcorder will do a decent job! The only major downside I see is that it has a fixed lens, so you can't get ultra-wide or ultra-long, but it seems a pretty decent camera.
When you look at cameras only a few years ago, this is a staggering device. The difference between a good and bad production isn't going to be the camera, it'll be the acting, lighting, script, sound, edit. 28 Days Later was shot on DV, for instance, and that's a great film.
