Correct order for titles(credits)for a short film

8 years, 3 months ago - Sergio Falchi

Dear All,

I'd like to know what is the general rule(if there is a strict one) for the tiels(credits) ant the end of a film( a short).

The Film Title is not in the beginning and the first things that will appear are two names of person as a dedication, than fade and the action begins. Than the Title. Probably in the "festival version I could add in the opening " A xxxxx's Film" than dedication...and so on....

At the end what's the correct order?

I am thinking about

Written Directed and Produced by(Produced if I don't write " axxxxx's film or in both case?"

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

ACTORS NAMES(MAIN Charachters)

DOP and CAMERA(Or Cinematography)

Thank you!

There aren't any strict rules. I prefer to credit the actors first, starting with the leads, then any supporting actors.

Then roughly this sort of order:
Director
Writer
Producer
DOP
Production Designer
Composer
Editor
Then your crew according departments- eg:
Production
Camera (usually put the sound recordist in here)
Art Department
Makeup/Wardrobe
Post Production crew etc.

Thank you Paul, I have to consider that we were a very small crew...basically me(writer/director) Dop and camera was one person, Editor that was also on set for general help as AD, boom operator and additional audio and art department was me and two other guys who helped ...plus actors assistants(there was a 13 y.old girl) and a production assistant/runner.In post the colorist is the DOP and we have a sound designer. No music conposer. So I think I will go with a reduced credits order:)!

Had a big problem with this once Sergio and was told to keep my nose out of it and that it was the director's business not mine (as the writer that is). The problem was I wanted all the titles at the beginning - I also wanted them all lower case and small but this was dismissed with a wave of the hand - as I favoured a total 'black' for the final scene as this would be consistent with the ending.
The director listened and ignored it.

Hi All,

Here's a few link I found useful when producing my last short ( piecesfilm.com ) helped with the billing and clarifies which order names and roles should appear. Hope this helps

Festivals aren't gonna judge you on the order you put your credits in so its not worth worrying too much over. I'd personally put the actors first, then go through the crew and finish up with producers, writers than the director but that's just how I prefer to see them.

Allan I just can imagine your disappointment...This time(by the way my very first) I am completely free to choose How to proceed because I am writer and director and also Producer...I don't want to appear to selfish so I am thinking to not put " A Sergio Falchi's film" in the opening before the dedication...but maybe it should be OK ...if not basically only the film's title is in the first scene(not in the opening) and then all in the closing...not sure.Thank you Dean this sheet is helpful even if I don't find the triple credits: written directed and produced by...in your opinion if I'd go for "A xxxx's film" this qualifies me as a producer(not really important but just to know) or must be clarified? Yes Richard, generally speaking I am conpletely with your point, not a serious problem, just to have an idea about it...considering that the running time is so limited(3 and 5 minutes the longer version) And the small crew I don't want to appear redundant or grand...

I'm not a fan of "A Film By (The Director" or "A (Director's Name) Film" especially at the beginning of short films which I feel are best when the get straight to the story and entertaining the audience. Films are made by the entire cast and crew, they're all just as important as the director. A little bit of humility tends to go a long way.

Creatively I prefer not to have the film's title at the front on a short, so you're getting to the entertainment first. The audience knows what the title is before they watch it.

Yes Paul, these are also my thoughts..just so new and consequently I 'm like an elephant trying to move into a cristals shops...the.title isn't in the opening but in a certain point because it is functional to the entretainment and narrative...
I will go for the semplicity

Sergio - You're writing, producing and directing? Do what you damned well like mate. It's your movie! Personally I agree with Paul and often cringe at a 'Bill Bloggs movie'. But who cares what I (we) think. Does this business reward modesty?

Yes Allan, I basically organize all(or almost all) and pay for catering and expendables...the crew helped me for free..I wrote and direct the film, and also be the head of art department and wardrobe/costumes/both not credited because I prefer to give titles to people who helped me), ... this is a very crazy attempt!, but I think well done(I hope so)...yes I am going for any " A film by...." in the supershort version for a local contests(Sardinia and some in Italy) according with the "cooperative spirit" of the whole thing and then, for the slightly longer version that will be"released" in other festival and wherever useful I will take my time(a couple of weeks ) to decide in OK to put " A film by..."etc... I think that modesty is better than selfish attitude, just maybe it could be useful to put a name when you're trying to be seen so far way from your local area...let's see the mood after the longer(I am talking about a short of maybe 5/6 running time no more)editing and subtitling...
