INDEXCost of creating a 3 min animation
8 years, 9 months ago - Tim Butcher
Hello all,
I may have an opportunity to direct an animated film for a client, but my experience is mainly in live action.
I thought it would be a good idea to ask for advice on how this process is going to be different from what im used to - whether there are many special considerations in terms of taking the project from concept to completion that may not have occurred to me, or any common pitfalls for live action directors making this transition.
To give some context, the project will be 3 to 4 mins, likely a sort of animated infographic, so potentially stylistically similar this bupa ad:https://youtu.be/8MDP0Mc9gxQ
Id also be interested to hear what people think would be a reasonable rate to pay an animator for a project of this type. The budget could be around 10k.
Thanks!

Hi Tim
The workflow is a bit different to live action, and the key to success is making sure the client is aware of what they are signing off on at each stage. Animation is time consuming and expensive so the best results come from a carefully managed and efficient process, ensuring as little work as possible ends up in the bin. Common problems are trying to make a 3 minute film with a 6 minute script, and attempting to put a lot of text on screen.
I have been producing/directing infographic animations for several years. You can see some examples here;

Hi guys,
Thanks for your help with that. Duncan - that's really useful, and certainly the impression I've gotten from talking to a few other people to. I like the stuff on your site. I think the client is going to need a little time to figure out what they want and what's going to be feasible, but I'll bear you in mind once we're a bit further down the line if that's alright :)
