I couldn't agree more with Alwyne when he says, "But why not start making little films on your own while you are aiming for something bigger?" But you likely think you need a guide! After I retired I took continuing ed courses at NYU and SVA in New York and I networked, networked, networked. Nobody does it alone in making a film, not even Orson Welles. (Lol!!!) A beginner's guide might be "Film Directing, Shot by Shot" by Steve D. Katz, or "Directing: Film Techniques and Aesthetics" by Michael Rabiger, both of which I read a while ago, and Nick Profreres's "Film Directing Fundamentals" of which I've read excerpts in a course. You can get them on Amazon. Best of luck to you!!! And remember, the people who succeed in this business are the people who stay in it!!!

Well, maybe write or acquire a short film script (acquire by putting out a post for one here on SP, trawling through the Script Pitch section), then start posting for people to collaborate with. People will be easier to find it you can pay them, but plenty of people will give their time for free for a good project.
But why not start making little films on your own while you are aiming for something bigger? Get together with a few actors and even you only shoot on a mobile phone at least you'd start getting experience at directing, then others will be able to see if you have a talent for it, and one thing will lead to another.

Join Directors UK. That way you can network with working directors and get advice.

Thanks, I have had a look, but I can't see a section to "join" is it like it is on here? Subscription-based? or a forum?

Re Directors UK. There's a "Join Us" button on the top let of most of the site's pages. Unfortunately for you, if you click you will be asked: "Are you eligible? Do you have a director credit on a broadcast UK television programme, commercially distributed feature film, or other publicly screened or commercially exploited audiovisual work?"
If you click "no" then tough - you are ineligible to join.

Hello Betty,
After 25 years directing broadcast television drama series and serials, following 10 years as a floor manager / first assistant director and 6 years stage managing in theatre and television, I picked up the pen to write a variety of short drama film screenplays. I have just completed directing just one of these films and, with the exception of mentoring / advising and the occasional lecture or talk, I have now decided to retire from directing to focus on my writing. If you would like to contact me for a discussion and / or read my screenplays in case they are of interest, please e-mail at nicholas.prosser@gmail.com
