INDEXDoc Makers Map
8 years, 1 month ago - Reality Check
I just attended Sheffield Doc/Fest and there was a lot of talk of "getting your foot in the door" and "just pick up a camera and shoot something" I thought it would be really helpful to make a UK wide map of different art/community centres, media outlets, charities where it is inexpensive to borrow equipment. I was lucky enough to get volunteer cameramen and free gear to make my first short doc, but not many have those opportunities, or if they do, might not be aware of them. A map of facilities where you can most cheaply (or better yet, freely) start self shooting would be great for first time filmmakers as well as doc makers. Anyone got suggestions to stick on the map?

This is a great idea. My advice would be camera shops. Most of them hire out Canon gear for 48 hour trial periods. Such as Wilkinson in Liverpool. Another Liverpool place is FACT . You can hire gear and room facilities relatively cheap.

Thanks Jenny! I thought it's a pretty simple idea but could be really useful for first time filmmakers. I was so, so lucky to get free access to crew and equipment, it would be brilliant if those opportunities are available elsewhere, but a map of the cheapest options could be just as helpful. Anyone know any other inexpensive facilities in other cities? Thanks :)

Great idea Reality Check! I'm starting up and have been using my photography camera (Canon 5D) but would love to try others...
