Documentary editing courses in London that concentrate on teaching technique rather than teaching the software.

My initial though on this is that a course on the technique of editing a specific genre of film doesn't exist because the only way to learn is to do it but I'd like to see if there are any other opinions on why I can't seem to find a course that offers this. Most editing courses I see teach you a specific piece of software rather that the techniques needed to be a competent editor. Thoughts very much appreciated, thank you.

Have a look at editing stage 3/advanced at the City Lit in Holborn. I think that is aimed at developing your skills and you work on your own project . I've done a couple of courses with Lily and she's very rigorous about story and structure.

Look to see where Catalin Brylla is working at the moment. I've not taken any of his courses, but he cut a doc I shot a few years back and did a lovely job. Seems to have been developing a thoughtful approach to the meanings and cultural aspects of editing as much as the (nonetheless important) IT and workflow stuff. On the road ior I'd

Check out 'inside the edit' https://insidetheedit.com the guy who does it was on Indy film hustle podcast explaining it, it's exactly what you want! There are a few taster tutorials on vimeo

I echo Sue Carpenter's advice about City Lit and stage 3 editing. I have done that course myself and found it extremely useful. It may not be exactly what you are looking for as it is not so much a course about specific techniques, but more about narrative construction.

Thanks so much guys for your replies, I know about InsideTheEdit and it does look like just what I want. I think I may go with this if I can't find a short course which involves attending a lecture. I like the City Lit course as a second option, did not know about this course. Many thanks!
