Dodgy festivals?

9 years, 11 months ago - Stephan George

Hi everyone,
while browsing for festivals on FilmFreeway I came across a few festivals who strangely have a big picture in their descriptions that sort of encourages filmmakers to use another website, www.festivalsupport.org, to submit, which looks rather dodgy.
It also directs to a website called indieola.com, which encourages you to setup your own festivals...
My gut feeling is that this is a scam, but of course I can be wrong, so I was wondering if any of you have experience with one of these festivals?

UK Horror Festival - https://filmfreeway.com/festival/Horror
Somerset Film Festival - https://filmfreeway.com/festival/Somerset
Hampshire Film Festival - https://filmfreeway.com/festival/Hampshire
Dark Scream - Going Viral - https://filmfreeway.com/festival/DarkScream

And I just found them on FB and there are even more festivals...

I have some personal experience of the people running these festivals though it was some time ago. They are not bad people but personally just looking at the sites, the sites they link to and that weird spammy advert on the filmfreeway pages I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. In my experience of these kinds of festivals and especially those run by these people you won't get any benefit from entering and even if they run no one goes to see them. It isn't a scam but it is a waste of your money and you should be looking for more substantial festivals with a real track record rather than events which are in effect personal hobbies.

I've had experience of Indieola. They run their own festival and if you are selected for any of the festivals you've listed, you get a discount on the entry fee. I've also been selected for one of those festivals (don't know if info is embargoed or everyone has been contacted) and the Inideola site is a portal for uploading your screening materials and support info e.g. stills and biogs. So far, it seems very efficient and kosher.
