Does anybody have experience building a set in a studio?

10 years, 3 months ago - Mark Owen

Hi guys.

I'm in need of a particular location for an upcoming film, but so far all my efforts have proved fruitless.

Don't really want to go down this route, but was wondering if any of you had past experience with building your own set or hiring people to do it for you?

I need a flat/apartment, but if I build it, I can create the exact requirements. But then there's hiring floor space with a studio or wherever, not to mention supply costs, building costs and general fees and then set dressing. This could easily reach thousands I'm guessing.

Anybody had any experience with it though? Pros and cons? Who should I go for if I do build it?

Thanks,
Mark

Yes, I've done exactly this for a feature - we needed a house interior to be badly run down for about 50pp+ of script. Yes, you pay for studio hire, build, dress and scrap costs but your have some of those costs anyway. The big difference is speed - location we'd get upto 3pp/day, studio set you can get 10pp with fewer crew, you can have days/nights/morning/noon/views over rooftops/down in basement as you please, you can fly walls or cut a hole if you need an angle. Need a radiator to move 3' to the left? Tell the art director and it's done. You have easy access to parking, some studios have their own lamps, canteens, flat hire, etc., making your life easy. And if you need a second apartment set, get Art to move a wall, redress and decorate, relight, can be done overnight and you can be shooting again in 11 he's time...

Costs vary hugely with the studio you use, PM me for couple of suggestions well away from London, and contact for a great Art Director who'll manage construction, team, etc.

I've just set up a studio space in Southend, Essex if you're looking at hiring some space? Studio is 11x9ft.
