Does anyone have any experience shooting small scale docs in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia?

I'm planning a shoot there in June and wanted some advice on visas and risks. Thanks!

Will you be under anybody's wing? I've filmed in country a few times and always had filming permit: bit of a faff but worth it if yr stopped on location or anyone questions yr kit at customs (which happens). Wing to be under makes paperwork easier

Thanks for the response Susi and Michael. I've filmed in Africa before so know roughly what it will be like, but have just heard a lot about tension in the media in the lead up to the election.

Susi, how long before you travelled did you apply for your permit? it says on the embassy that 'The cost of a film permit is a tiny percentage of the production costs.', do you remember what percentage this was?

Thank you - really appreciate the advice!

Get locks for your hold luggage.

Don't go anywhere after dark unless with people you trust. Most bad things happen after dark...

Take a reflector and a variable ND filter! Contrast is crazy in Africa and you'll get beautiful shots if you have these things.

I'm sure you'll be fine, most places that seem dangerous aren't and are full of friendly people. Be nice to strangers and they will be on your side.

Maybe take a list of your kit to travel with to show customs, put the value of everything but under estimate it MASSIVELY. Some customs will try to get you to pay based on how much it's worth.

Be prepared for people to ask for money or to pay bribes. Don't be afraid to say no but paying someone at the right time can help.

Enjoy it. You're very likely to be fine and have a great time :)
