ASK & DISCUSS
INDEXDoes anyone have experience of filming at the Hamstead Heath Bathing Ponds?

Just interested to see if anyone had ever attempted/ successfully filmed at the Bathing Ponds. Were there lots of stipulations? Was it expensive? Any other comments? We're interested to film there as part of an upcoming low-budget short.
Thanks,
Tommy

Hi Tommy,
Are you aware of this feature coming out that's set at the ponds? https://www.thepondsfilm.com/about. You might be able to contact the filmmakers to find out more.
Good luck!

I think the City of London owns the ponds.
I believe these people would probably be able to help you with your proposal. http://filmlondon.org.uk/
In general, everything can be discussed. BUT...
INSURANCE - Public Liability by the production will almost certainly be needed and perhaps Professional Insured Crew for certain roles that present clear risks if done badly - e.g if you will combine power cables with wet environments a qualified electrician might be required.
Minimal Impact on their public use while you film. TBH ANY impact makes it hard to get (anywhere public use) for free, and even if they love the project any special arrangements will probably mean having at least one staffer on overtime, who you will need to pay for.
Good luck

Hi Tommy
I've filmed part of a short on Hampstead Heath last year, not at the bathing ponds mind you. The stipulations vary depending on the area and are mainly to do with not causing any damage to the heath (certain trees, etc) - it was nothing particular onerous for us. The permits are managed directly by heath staff so just get in touch with them, all info on the City of London website (https://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/things-to-do/green-spaces/hampstead-heath/visitor-information/Pages/Filming-on-Hampstead-Heath.aspx). Like any park in London it's not cheap, rates will be on a sliding scale based on the size of the production.

You're unlikely to get permission. The swimmers don't like it. I knew someone that had to jump through major hoops for one still.
There must be an equivalent somewhere. First thing on Google: https://www.redbull.com/gb-en/london%27s-10-best-wild-swimming-spots

Thank you everyone who's commented!
Marlom - thanks for the contact details, tips on insurance (I presume like the rest of LDN locations they'll want the minimum of 5M PL), and notes on minimal impact (we really will be doing the shortest of scenes here - our lead doesn't even get in the water).
Bertil - Interesting to hear from someone who has actually filmed at Hamstead Heath Ponds; was your production similar in terms of budget? Were there any imposed stipulations that you weren't expecting?
Karel - Thanks for the link & advice, Stoke Newington looks like a good back-up!
