INDEXDoes anyone know how I can play Apple files on my PC?

Hi,
A camera operator has given me lots of footage (120GB) on a hard drive but he works on an Apple and I've got a PC. I can get audio but not visual when I run them on QuickTime Player, and get a message that some components are missing. Any ideas, please?

Hi,
Try the free vlc player. You can download it here: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html
Hope that helps

Quicktime needs to be updated with the latest codecs, and if that doesn't work, pull the files into an editing system, or conversion tool and convert them to your codec/ file of choice.

They're not ProRes since Apple's QuickTime Player can play those on PC. They might be DNxHD since that's also popular (you'd need to install the Avid codecs if that's the case). Best thing to do is ask the camera operator what they are or, failing that download MediaInfo and it should tell you: https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo
Note that MediaInfo comes bundled with adware - follow the installer prompts carefully unless you want to install an Ask toolbar or some other random crapware ;)

I am not highly technical on these points (and do not use Windows) but VLC player often fixes anything I cannot get to play in QT Player. Free download and easy to install.

Here's the Avid codecs btw should you need them: http://cdn.avid.com/Codecs/LE/2.6.0/CodecsLE_2.6.0_Win.zip
