Does anyone know where I can find someone to "create" a language for a film?

9 years, 3 months ago - Mark Owen

Hi guys.

As the title suggests, I'm making a film where I need an original language created.

I know certain people are hired to create or develop these languages.

Any pointers would be much appreciated :)

Thanks,
Mark

I have a friend who may be interested in this, but he needs a little more information first.

Creating a functioning language is a big job, could you use something that already exists but iss obscure like Lojban? Lojban is the most precise language created, it's quite amazing.

PS there's a benefit that there's a community already to help with translation and who'll doubtless become excited to hear of a project using it

Thanks for the responses guys.
I have never heard of Lobjan, but will investigate.
The language is an alien language, so preferably an unknown language would be preferably, short of making words up myself, but that runs the risk of consistency.

Find a University linguistics Professor who'd like a dissertation topic/project for some bright student? Wondering what yr timeframe is! And who these aliens might be; human-like, using sound audible to us for their 'language', or visible signing, or changing colour to communicate - wow, such a lovely big subject in itself

Heh heh Lojban is obscure enough to be almost unknown ;-)

I'll give all these options a try thanks! :)

Also it depends a lot on your story line and your aliens, how much they are going to speak, and how much they communicate by body language and expression (face or other suitable appendages). Maybe words are not everything.
Maybe you can find someone who speaks a little known language (Navaho? Welsh?) to translate. If there is any connection with earth, might they have a version of a known language, or something you can fabricate along those lines.
Good luck with it,

Yen, best you go in disguise if you cross the Severn. There's more than a few Welsh peeps who might want a word :-)

One suggestion would be to record the dialogue in english, split up each audio clip into section of dialogue, then reverse each audio clip which is easily done.

Good luck with it.

Try Emma Smith, who is currently part of "This Is A Voice" exhibition at the Wellcome Trust

Any language, dead or unknown, created by humans will always sound human. Doesn't matter how clever or functional is. This is because we create languages using the sounds we can prouduce with our voices.
If you want to create an alien language, I'd suggest that you first think what are the sounds these creatures make, and only then with those sounds you create the new language.
For this you will need a team more than a person. At least a good sound designer and a professor in linguistics.
Wish good luck! Please keep us posted with new about it, it will be great to know how you sort it out at the end!
