Does Script Pitch actually work?

10 years ago - Burning Chrome

Has any producer or director found a project or connected with a writer via Script Pitch? Have any writers posting on Script Pitch had requests for scripts or even had a script produced?

Great. Very encouraging feedback. I'm looking to find a producing partner for my zero-budget sci-fi short but its too early to post to Filmmakers so Script Pitch is ideal. Hoping to emulate you - Tim Berry.

I always make a point of checking out the pitches on there and have requested to read scripts a couple of times. In the end didn't pursue them any further. It is a good way to make connections for future projects too.

I've read some scripts from script pitch, one I was interested in would have been just too expensive for me to find finance for (it was a period piece with very specific music requirements). There are some interesting projects posted, some sell themselves better than others, and ultimately it's a bit of a dating site

This is a question I've been wanting to ask, so well done for asking it...I'd also be interested to know of any Script Pitch successes as I've been tempted to put some of my own stuff on there...

Christopher Green may I say you should be punting and pitching everywhere, how else does your work get found?

Yes I picked up the script for my latest short 'The couch surfer' through this list. The writer and I worked through several further drafts, it worked out well and an enjoyable project to shoot. There don't seem to be enough postings offering short scripts here. So if you have one offer it up, people can only say no!

Has worked, pitches I put on here led to meetings, in one case the script was optioned but never produced, but that led to meetings with contacts that led to my first (no budget) feature, that led to my second (micro-budget) feature, and then my third (still micro-budget but larger than before), then the third feature led to a contact and an award-winning director and a film now moving ahead with a budget of 8 million. So it's mad to think you'll pitch and someone will swoop in and buy your script for a stack of cash, but it can help you create the alliances and relationships that move you towards where you want to be.

It does work. About 5 years ago I got a feature script optioned from someone who found it on Script Pitch. The film never got produced. I have also had interest in other scripts I posted.

Just one thing, BC, make your pitch intriguing and realistic to attract best attention. Intriguing as you're trying to hook the attention over the other pitches, realistic as 'no budget' doesn't exist... and any 'producing partners' know that! There will always be some costs, and all the labour will effectively be subsidising the film production! Shorts don't make big/much/any money, so it's great that you've written to a budget and that'll help interested parties too - so feel free to play on that in the pitch, just show a bit of savvy around anything else you can bring to the project (for instance if you've got a cameraman friend who'll do you a freebie, or a sister who's made all the costumes and sets, or a mother who'll cater...!)

It does work. I contacted a Shooter, Rick Hughes, in 2010 after seeing a short pitch of his called 'Victims' He lived in Scotland and I lived in London but we developed the script together by email and over the phone, eventually submitted it to Film London's Borough Film Fund, got award-winning actress Hattie Morahan and former singer with The Beautiful South, Brianna Corrigan on board and got it made. The film was nominated for Film London's Best of Borough Award, Rick was nominated for a BAFTA Scotland New Talent Award and the film was picked up by Shorts International for television broadcast in the US. It's now available to download on iTunes.

Works really well. I put my short film 'Robotics' on there a few years back and it was picked up by a Dutch film maker. The final result was screened at Cannes.

I've tried a couple of feature scripts but didn't get far with them. I've always had more success with interest in my script once they've been listed a second time.

Go figure.

I am pretty sure that I got in contact with Ibby Mirro through shooting people last feb. He wanted to commission a feature (so not quite the script pitch) He is now in post production on the feature that I wrote for him. I've had three other people interested in work. I think it's best not to give sole rights for your work until there's a definite budget, shooting date, and contract in place as it's easy for producers to say that they want something without committing. I also think the advice about pitching it a couple of times is right. Definitely worth a shot.

I have never looked at "script pitch" so can somebody provide a link/explananion? Thanks :-)

Script Pitch is one of the regular Shooting People bulletins available to all members. It comes out every Wednesday and any member can post their pitches to it, with a few restrictions (only 3 pitches per poster, each project only pitched once per month).

You can find it on the SP site https://shootingpeople.org/myaccount/bulletin

If you subscribe to it, you'll get it sent to your inbox every week.

Definitely does work. I pitched a short script in 2013 and found a director and producer who picked up the project and entered it in the Pears Short Film competition. We won and the short film (called Happy New Year) was produced and screened at various festivals. But, as has been mentioned above, keep your expectations realistic. The script pitch bulletin is not a substitute for the part of the job most screenwriters dislike: pressing the flesh, being a nice person to work with, being willing to listen to feedback and rewrite, and generally just being professional and flexible.

Haven't used it too often, but with 100% success rate nonetheless. Posted a couple of short scripts that generated interest, and after finding the right producers, both were made to a good standard. A valuable forum in my opinion.
