INDEXEditing 6k footage
2 years, 2 months ago - Fred W
Hello,
My short horror film is shot with RED 6k footage and I’d like to edit it without straining my computer/workflow too much.
Is there any way to edit in lower resolution and later add the higher resolution when exporting the final film?
I have DaVinci Resolve already in place and may have to incorporate some visual effects later probably by having someone helping me with it. Another option is to use Premiere to edit but that adds to my already running high costs.
Any recommendations or places where I can read about these things?

As the other poster has said, you want to be using proxies. One other thing though, to go from RED files to proxies, I think you will need the paid version of Resolve. I did what you are going through a while back when we shot with two RED cameras.
I would advise practising on a dummy project in Resolve e.g. with some spare RED footage first, so that you properly "get" the workflow involved.

I’m guessing if I go for Premiere, using proxies is not an issue?
Is it also an advantage to use premiere if adding visual effects later?

There is no advantage for adding vfx later by using Premiere. You can do the same in Resolve. I would stay with Resolve. Saves you learning and paying for another software program. The only advantage for Premiere would be if your going to be doing the vfx using After Effects in the Adobe Creative suite. Even then its not that much of an advantage other than easy intergration with the apps in the suites.

With RED footage, you can also try turning your debayer settings to lower quality. Red compression works well in this way. It's under Cmera RAW settings in Resolve.
File > Project Settings > Camera Raw > Raw Profile (Dropdown) - RED
Set your Decode quality to half or even quater res good and see how you get on.
In Resolve's playback menu, there is also a 'Timeline Proxy Resoltion' which can help.
And you can also use the 'Smart' option under Render Cache in the same menu, where Resolve will try and cache the timeline for you automatically.
