Establishing Shots podcast

Hi everyone – As per some of the discussions I've had here on SP and in person at various meet-up events and on sets, I've just launched a new indie filmmakers' podcast (yes, I know there are others, there always will be; please resist telling me this as I already know it!). It'll feature interviews across a wide range of areas, and hopefully will be quite interesting. At the moment, it's just a passion project that I'm doing on the side of my proper, paid work (which is also in podcasting), so the release schedule might not be perfect, and I can only spend a half-day on each episode, including recording.

Anyhow, I've released a couple of episodes. The first was with Chloe Trayner director of the Open City Documentary Festival, discussing how to get your films (particularly docs) into top-level festivals like that. This week's episode is with Jay Alvarez, a writer/director/actor whose film Dizzy Pursuit is playing at Raindance. It's a very low-budget flick (c.$30k) but is executive produced by the Russo Brothers, and I think is a really interesting look at how people jump up funding blocks from indie project to indie project. The Russos are championing his next film as well, which will be significantly more ambitious, both technically and in its budget. Anyhow, there's lots of interesting stuff from Jay in the interview and I hope you might get something out of it.

On this week's episode, I'm speaking to Morgan Neville, the Oscar winning director of 20 Feet From Stardom, now back with his US smash-hit documentary Won't You Be My Neighbor? You can listen to the episode here: https://audioboom.com/posts/7046355-how-to-make-an-oscar-winning-documentary-with-morgan-neville

This is a labour of love at the moment, and not something I make a dime off, so do please consider subscribing on Apple/Spotify/Google Podcasts as it's really helpful to me, in lieu of money to buy food and shelter. Hi Nick,
I shall certainly have a listen. There may be lots of other Indy podcasts. There are also lots of films but that’s not a reason to not make anymore. Imagine if that were applied to crisps or cake. We wouldn’t have Red Velvet or Salt and Vinegar McCoys.

Indeed! And, ultimately, I'm doing this as a labour of love and not drawing resources away from anyone else, so no real harm.

Hope you enjoy!

On my podcast this week I've got some of the cast of the new Coen Brothers movie, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (Tim Blake Nelson, Zoe Kazan, Harry Melling, Bill Heck). Quite short but quite sweet!

I took a couple of months off this project because I had to focus on work that was getting me paid, and the last interview I had done before Christmas, with director Yann Demange, wasn't very good and made me reappraise why I was doing this...

Anyhow, I'm going to start releasing episodes again, starting with this week where I talk to writer/director and Academy Award winning VFX developer (and also Shooting People member) Ben Kent about his new horror-comedy, F.U.B.A.R. Grateful for any listeners:

Heya,

Don’t know if you remember me (I’m the one on the left) - but I was interning at the Spectator while you were there, and just saw this! Me and my sister (the one on the right) just finished our first feature film and it’s premiering at London Independent Film Festival at Genesis Cinema so we’re trying to promote it now - don’t know if you’re interested at all - but we’d love to come on the podcast if you’re looking for any guests :) Oh and our website is www.shakespeare-sisters.com

Yes, hello, I remember! And congratulations, looks great (I also premiered by first film at the Genesis, just after it stopped being a dive and became such a nice, trendy cinema). Can you drop me an email to nick@podotpods.com and we can chat? Thanks!

Great stuff Nick. Did you know there are lots of....... only kidding ;) I'll give it a listen. Also, congratulations Hillary on LIFF. You are in good hands there. (Our film won 'best feature' 2 years ago ;))

Thanks Simeon – I'm going to do a Kind Hearts and Coronets style scheme, knocking off the competition until I'm the only filmmaking podcast standing...

Hello Nick, I'm the Producer/Co-Director of "They Sing up on the Hill", a Mongolian indie-music feature that had it's world premier at Busan International Film Festival last year. This year it will be touring. I have loads of chat about certain strange quirks of the 'world cinema' scene. Get in touch if you're interested. All the best, Ian.

Hullo again! The latest episode of this is up and it's with Sheyma Buali, the director of the BBC Arabic Festival. I didn't really know much about the festival or, indeed, Arabic filmmaking going into the interview, but actually found it all really interesting in terms of understanding where world cinema is right now, what the BBC's commissioning priorities are, and various other discussion points. If you fancy a listen it's here: https://audioboom.com/posts/7208730-what-does-arabic-cinema-look-like-in-2019-with-sheyma-buali

And if you enjoyed it then I'd be really grateful if you would subscribe. I've said it before but this is something that I'm doing just because I hope that it will be an interesting resource, even if it's just for a handful of people. I lose money doing it (good business model Nick) but that's ok, so long as it finds some sort of audience. So if you can subscribe and maybe even rate and review, I'd be very grateful: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/establishing-shots/id1435393536?mt=2

New episode of the Establishing Shots podcast is with writer/director Ben Kent, who I actually first met via Shooting People a few years ago. Anyhow he's just released his first feature film, Killer Weekend, and I interviewed him about this (I actually interviewed him a few months back too about the production process, now this is about the distribution process): https://audioboom.com/posts/7259466-how-to-release-your-film-to-the-world-with-ben-kent

Hi everyone! Hope you're keeping well during lockdown. I've taken this opportunity to launch a new series of my Establishing Shots podcast, starting this week with Mark Jenkin, the writer/director of the fantastic Bait, which won him a BAFTA earlier in the year. You can listen here on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/episode/6yyOxuSJ6IKRBtx4Vu9Rpj
or subscribe on Apple if you prefer: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/establishing-shots/id1435393536?ls=1

And always very keen to have SP members on the podcast if you've got projects to talk about (aiming for people working professionally in the industry, so that they can explain the process and path to others). Drop me a line to nick[@]podotpods.com and we can chat!
