Excellent (and affordable) musicians to perform score?

8 years, 10 months ago - Suba Sivakumaran

Hi everyone,

I have a composer who's written a score and is now looking for musicians to play it (extremely affordably) for a low budget feature. The schedule is a bit tight, as the performance will have to be done in the 1st week of November. Any leads? Your assistance would be MUCH appreciated!! (Looking for flutists, violinists and one other woodwind instrument as yet to be determine)

If you want a 40pc orchestra, fully engineered and recorded, all world-class musicians, £5k/half-day all-inclusive including orchestration, printing, studio, engineers, etc) (gets you about 15' of finished score per half-day), PM me.

Whatever you do, it seems you need an arranger to do a fair bit of work. The vagueness of the instrument list suggests that no one involved so far has precisely worked out what each musician will play. I mean no offence by this. However I have had quite a lot of experience of music education, so I am used to seeing the confusion that can develop when instrumental parts lack clarity, contain out of range notes, make impractical demands etc. I would suggest you get an arranger/orchestrator to look over the score first and say what you need. Perhaps your composer has already worked out some parts (eg piano/guitar) other than violins, flutes and "other" woodwind instrument you list. However, if those are the only sources of sound in the music then it is likely your score is lacking in lower mid-range and bass. Apologies if this sounds a little negative, but I am trying to save you getting into a pickle by hiring musicians without the score being ready. Probably the best source for musicians who you might be able to afford would be one of the music colleges - RCM, RAM, Guildhall, Trinity etc. However, you should still try to pay Musicians' Union rates. Allow good time for rehearsal, and if there are more than a few players you may well need a conductor - unless musicians will be playing to a click track.

Hi! thanks for these and the great advice. Will follow up as advised! Still looking for soloists on a low-budget friendly level (particularly for the doudouk) so if anyone knows anyone would be great!

I recommend Lewis Wright, a really talented rising composer. He recently composed an awesome score for a sci-fi horror concept film I made. His work can be found here:

Lewis really tailor made my score and knew exactly what I wanted, he's flexible, got epic ideas and an epic style with it. I'm rooting for him big time, just because he's definitely up and coming!

Music Colleges might be worth approaching, if only because you might have a reading week for rehersals.

Sorry, just read the brief properly. Woodwind: I play saxes, including soprano. (also play bass gtr) Where would you be recording? I'll be away from the 11th to the 26th. If it's "dots" you could send me some to peruse, or even learn in case you want to use me.
