INDEXFilm Festival Advice

Hi Shooters !
I am a filmmaker based in Algeria and I am currently making my first documentary film about the difficulties facing women in Algeria.
Can anyone give me advice on the best film festivals in Britain which to submit my film? It will be in French but with English subtitles.
Thank you !

Hi Ines! Your documentary sounds super exciting - do post in when it's available to watch somehow in the UK.
With film festivals, it's a good shout to look into what film festivals really relate to your film as well as the wider film festivals.
For example, Sheffield DocFest and Open City Documentary Festival are both really great for documentaries. Underwire film festival focuses on stories from women filmmakers too...
Is your documentary a short or a feature? The UK has some amazing shorts festivals especially, but there's tons for great features too.

Jim nails it with looking into each individual festival and finding something that suits (to reduce wasting your fees or time!).
Look at https://filmfreeway.com/ to see what festivals there are, and then do some background reading :)

Hi Jim !
These are great suggestions - thank you ! At the moment I have made a short documentary film - the topic is serious but the tone of the film is quite light (I think !).
Are there specific festivals for shorter documentaries ? Or do the festivals only accept feature documentary ?

Hi Ines,
British Council Film has a Festivals Directory which you can use to search for any UK festivals. You can see it here: http://film-directory.britishcouncil.org/festivals-directory
Good luck with it :)

Big Syn International Film Festival. This is a United Nations Initiative and they are especially keen to support filmmakers with a message. You can find them on Instagram and searching their name, I think they are also on Filmfreeway.com
Good luck with the documentary.
