Film Podcast Recommendations

1 year, 8 months ago - Jim Read

Heya all,

Anyone else find the current offerings of film-focused podcasts a tad lack lustre?

Business talk is great and needed, but I'd love to find some pods to listen when I'm not in a learning mood and more just looking for fun content.

Outside of film, 99% Invisible and Reply-All have been my faves so far...

I can strongly recommend Cinematologists http://www.cinematologists.com by my brilliant colleague Dario Llinares. Wide-reaching, fun, thoughtful and 100% cinema.

For writers, I've enjoyed Screaming into the Hollywood Abyss (Hollywood the focus, but it has a lot of interviews with writers (also producers, and directors) sharing their stories of failure, rejection, and perseverance. So it's a good one for resilience! Also the Screenwriter’s Rant Room. It's hosted by a screenwriter/filmmaker Hilliard Guessand is holds nothing back with interviews, discussions, and helpful rants about the art and craft of screenwriting.

Also want to second Team Deakins!
So gooood in particular for understanding and hearing about the range of approaches to shooting scenes, setups and blocking.
Mostly from Director and DOP perspectives.

It may not be to everyone’s taste but I really enjoy the ringer content (I think it’s exclusive on Spotify now). There’s The Big Picture, The Rewatchables and The Watch. It’s all from a fan/critic perspective rather than being filmmaker focused. The project overall seems to be to treat film & tv like it’s an American Sport, lots of rankings, hot takes and impressions. If none of that is grating then all their stuff is a lot of fun.

Hey Jim, great question - thanks for asking and thanks for everyone who made nice new suggestions that made it straight to my 'to listen' list!

One I can recommend (sadly just finished but with a great backlog of recent interviewees from across the film industry):
