Finding work in New York City

10 years, 6 months ago - Marcus Ebanks

Hi all!

I live in London, and I graduate from university in a few months time, summertime really, and I was quite interested in possibly looking to find work in New York City, film industry related.

I would like to move there permanently later on in my lifetime as I love the place, but anything temporary is always great too, as I was told the film industry in NY is quite different from London.

Any tips and advice on whether something like this is possible would be hugely grateful, especially from those living in NY.

Thanks!
Marcus

Maybe some work in the industry over here first. Build up your real world knowledge and experience. I know the scene in NY for filmmakers and its not for the faint of heart. You'll need to hit the ground running and with no experience, you might become one of the casualties that limp home having wondered what hit them!

Sorry to not offer much more of a positive response. But you are right when you say that the industry is quite different out there. I know of two people who came back after spending a few months there straight from film school here, and they changed career upon their return!

Some film schools, and Im not saying yours because I don't know which one you went to (in fact reading back your message, I dont even know now if you went to film school), prepares you for making a film, but not the industry you'll have to compete in or the career that you'll have to forge with a mighty hammer in order to survive - hence my suggesting getting some experience here first.

Good luck.

My 2c worth.

No doubt someone else will jump in with good or bad news about visas, but as you are a student I'd def see what sort of scope that might offer. It used to be "summer camp hell" that paid and the savings allowed a trip after, but I think now there are all sorts of summer internships that students can get visas for. Maybe a film industry opp in there.
