fog/smoke hire in London?

9 years, 11 months ago - Karel Bata

I need to some Hammer style smoke (clinging to the floor) in a small outdoor area for a couple of nights. Hopefully I can avoid dry ice these days. Needs to run for about 3 hours each time.

Any suggestions?

If it's small scale, how about using a pond fogger? Entirely different principle (ultrasonic vaporisation of water) so they run cold, hazard-free, and create a localised mist.

There are low smoke machines you keep putting ice in to make the smoke stay low. More ice the lower it stays see https://twitter.com/Platform2c/status/651645616385359872

Thanks for the info.

This was intended to give a bit of atmos in a small area during a live performance. One of my artsy installations in fact.

Having looked into it there's too many variables, like the autumn weather, that make the effort required questionable. But it's an option I'll use in the future.

Panalux or Neg Earth (both in Park Royal) will get what you need. Neg Earth are a bit more rock'n'roll so have stadium hazers etc as well. Panalux are filmy, so you may already be getting other lamps from them.

So you just make it cold? Cool!

£85 on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AMERICAN-DJ-MISTER-KOOL-LOW-FOG-SMOKE-DRY-ICE-CLOUD-EFFECT-MACHINE-HALLOWEEN-MR-/111469739166?hash=item19f41d3c9e

Just the usual problem of where to store it.

Yep, you can get chilled smoke machines which have a chiller on them, but they have a limited duty cycle and disperse quickly. You can also hand-make a cold box with ducting to chill smoke from a regular machine, but it's a bit messy. Also, Pea Soup (http://www.smokemachines.net/, fog specialists) may have some ideas for you.

Cheers! And close to where I'll be in Earl's Court.

(though any other suggestions are welcome)

Cheap, yes, but be aware it's dreadfully low-power. The output and duty cycle will be embarrassing if you're trying to cover any sort of area. Anything even bottom-end professional will be at least a kilowatt, and for continuous use closer to 2KW. This matters, as making smoke cools down the element, so the duty cycle is low for less powerful elements whilst they heat back up. Also, I suspect you'll need a lot of ice, and need to drain the water somewhere, regularly. I suspect it's meant more for bedroom DJ's than anything where you want to impress punters.

Depends on the requirement, £85 is cheap but for a reason and you might want to at least weigh up alternative options in case you come to test it and it falls short. If you do a test in identical circumstances (eg outdoors, warm day/cold night, people walking around, lights heating the stage, etc) and run it for the duration needed.

I'll look into that. Cheers!
