Fresh ideas for London venues for feature film test screening

12 years, 8 months ago - Peter Domankiewicz

I am looking for a suitable venue to do a test screening of my first feature film, TEA & SANGRIA, to see if there are any improvements to be made before we get to picture lock and see how people react to it, to help plan marketing.
This, like many projects on SP, is self-funded so all economies are useful economies. It doesn't have to be a cinema or established screening room per se, just a place where at least 25 people can see it projected and then discuss it. I am aware of the "Screening Room Map" but most of these places charge unaffordably high rates of £200+ per hour (plus VAT!) and we need a place for at least three hours. From past experience I've found that many people prefer to speak one-to-one rather than in a public discussion, so having a bar at hand often facilitates communication!
If you know of anywhere or have used anywhere in London which is "off the map" please let me know. For instance, some post-production places have such rooms but don't advertise. I've even approached the organisers of Walthamstow's pop-up cinema to see if it could be "popped up" in a social club (which has a cheap bar). All suggestions very welcome.

Thanks so much for all your answers. They were places that I hadn't otherwise heard of, so really useful. Am currently following them up.

For places "off the map", try BUFVC just off Oxford St. Phone 020 7393 1510 Revolver has opened a screening room: phone 020 7243 4300. Or Tricycle, Lexi Cinemas. Not sure of prices for these places...

Someone here on Shooting People suggested Shortwave Cinema, and I was very happy with my screening there.

It's affordable, and you shouldn't have a problem with getting a three hour slot. Plus it's got a bar!

Also - we've just done a deal with Soho House for people to rent the Aubin Cinema in Shoreditch.
It's a beautiful cinema and has a brilliant bar.

100/hr - so not dirt cheap but a lot better than most places and nothing like their normal rates

Shortwave is great, yes. When do you need the screening to be?

Roxy bar and screen in London bridge sounds perfect for what you want. I've used them a couple of times and they're very reasonable.
