Has anyone advice on working with agents.

I am the writer-director of 4 short films and also the creator/owner of 4 graphic novels. I am currently seeking an agent to represent me as I have a number of screenplays I would like to get made. I'm already aware of the writers and artists yearbook but would love to know if anyone in the SP community has advice or recommendations for as going to about this process or securing an agent, or even knows of an agent looking to represent someone, thanks in advance, Richard.

Hi Richard,

You really don't need an agent until you need one. You can try the usual process of sending enquiry letters to agents, explaining where you are at in your career, but you can also try registering one or more of your scripts at Script-Hub.co.uk where it can be seen and read by agents and producers.

I don't know of any agents who are actively seeking clients – they are like hens' teeth – but an enquiry letter costs very little and they do sometimes work.

I agree fully with everything David has said above.

If you are thinking of speculatively approaching agents with regards to representation, please make certain you do so by following the specific criteria they advise. As you can image they are inundated with requests for representation. So ensuring you've taken the time to read their submission approach will stand you in good stead from the outset.

I know for a fact that those who don't aren't given the consideration they may richly merit.

I attach a list of UK agents who represent screenwriters, you may already be familiar with this list but make certain to visit each website listed and understand their submission criteria.

Good luck.

I know a director for whom it took 5 distributed feature films to get an agent. Agents are commercial entities, they make money if you make money, so they only rep people they can make money from. If you're not of value in the industry yet (ie haven't made a bunch of stuff that's sold) then they are unlikely to rep you, or if they do, they'll not push you.
