"If you make your goal, they disburse the cash to you. If you fail to get there, however, they won't offer refunds to the donors." <<-- That's kinda a bad catch. It's essentially taking the worse aspects of Kickstarter and Indiegogo so that you could get into a situation where the only people that get any money is them. Hmmmm.

Ian is correct, they are differ from any other crowdfunding site in that they are arts-only campaigns, a non-profit, and invitation only. They work closely with you in setting up your campaign. And - another big point of differentiation - they offer matching funds. As you reach certain milestones in dollars raised, they will donate matching money. Additional funds are granted based on project merit. I raised over $22,000 to make my film NEW, and over $5000 of that was matching funds that came from Hatchfund. (You can see my campaign page here: http://www.hatchfund.org/project/new_a_short_film ) I had a great experience using them, obviously. However - and this is important to consider - because of the way non-profits are legally structured in the US, the donations are technically going to Hatchfund, not the filmmaker. If you make your goal, they disburse the cash to you. If you fail to get there, however, they won't offer refunds to the donors. Keep that in mind if you decide to use them, and set a goal you are confident you can hit. Good luck!

I used them. They are 100% legit and actually work very close with their artists to help them meet their goal. They boast a 75% success rate for fundraising, sometimes that means they lower the goal. However, it's a US-based organisation so I'm not sure how their distinction of a tax-deductible donation will work for overseas donors. In short, I learned a lot about fundraising working with them.
