INDEXHeadshot Review - what does it say to you?
12 years, 1 month ago - Steel Wallis
Hello,
I've always wondered what my headshot actually says to people and very interested to find out.. (typical actor starting a debate about himself) It's just I now see this photo so much (from signing into various websites, posting it and attaching it to emails, making it clear I don't just stare at it all day, honest) I no longer know what it means, if that makes sense.
Is it dull? Cheesy? Too Safe? Untelling? Fence sitting? Too commercial? Too Nice (on a Mum's mantle piece sort of way)? Naff? Insidious? Honest looking?
What does it say about me..? From a casting point of view.. Does it lack direction. choice or that good old USP?
No doubt some of you might ask,, does it look like me,, yes it does, and nearly all photos do..
Any input very much appreciated... This will either be very interesting or soul destroying, lets see this experiment unfold.
thanks
Steel

A bit sleepy, day after the night before, casual, trek to the Antarctic, adventure seeking, easy-going, good looking, would look great after a shower, a shave a good nights sleep and dressed smartly ;-)

I think it's a good photo. To me it says casual and easy going. It looks natural which I think is the most important thing.
It might be better to close in a bit more on the eyes - as they say in the film business, 'Shoot the eyes' because they tell us so much don't they?
That's a fab name by the way, whether it's real or stage name.
All the best.

On its own, it doesn't say a lot beyond your age and face shape - it could be a character you played or it could be what you look like all day every day. Nobody (sane) will hire on a solitary headshot alone, so make sure you have a few different looks standing by - then wow them at the auditions ;-)

Is this the pic with the plaid shirt on & the hand in pic? I'd love to see this pic with your eyes looking right to camera. Plaid shirt says casual, as does the face, the slacker, the tech guy, the roommate, he may pay his bills on time, he may not.
Are you tracking this headshot (ala PerformerTrack?)? Is it getting you called in? Are you booking directly from it? You may say that it looks like you. Can you post a photo of you in real life, holding that photo? Sometimes headshots hide weight, body structure, etc.

Thanks for your input, I hope you realise this is not a vanity thing.. Found your comments really fascinating and funny.
Unfortunately Paddy, in a way we are cast from just one photo, when a CD uses Spotlight (UK's main casting tool) they have a screen of headshots and they click on the ones they are interested in to get full details. So it might not be the actual photo that get you the job but it gets you through the first step of the process.
Most favourite comment was from Pat - " would look great after a shower, a shave a good nights sleep and dressed smartly"
Thanks All.. best of luck with whatever you have lined up.
