INDEXHelp with subtitling - .SRT FCP workflow
9 years, 3 months ago - Tomo Brody
HI I have recently come back from charity a project filming interviews in refugee camps in multiple different languages - around 6. I have a huge amount of subtitling to get done and have been offered a very cheap service to get a load of .srt files.
I edit in FCP and am not at all familiar with this workflow. Is there anyone out there who could provide a bit of training to get me up and running. Would be happy to pay for some tuition.
ANY help much appreciated.
Thanks,
Tomo

Hello Tomo,
SRT files are much more useful for a finished programme, rather than an editing workflow. Whenever I have worked with subtitling in the past, the translation house has given me XML files which I imported into FCP 7, which then created editable/movable subtitles on the timeline. Ask your supplier if they can give you FCP 7 XML instead. (I have no experience of using subtitles in FCP X, so I'm not sure if it is the same workflow.)
However, if they can only do SRT, these are very simple files and you can easily read them in a text editor. There's a simple tool on the link below to convert your SRT into FCP 7 XML, which you can then import into your timeline for editing along with the footage.
http://lassbros.com/subs2xml/subs2xml.php
And here's a tool for SRT to FCP X XML conversion

Best wishes,
Brian

Hi Brain, after using the lassbros link and coping the submitted text into Text Editor, saving as word 03 (.XML) I then try to import XML into FCP I get
ERROR no translation templates matching the selected XML file were found. Unable to import this file
Any suggestions? Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks again for your help!

Hello Tomo,
Sorry to hear about your error problem. I've not used that engine myself before. I found it just by searching for "import SRT into FCP" and it was the top hit. There are loads of others.
Best,
Brian
