I'm trying to kit out my second hand alexa plus on a budget as I don't want it to become a money pit. I just got a 5 pin to two three pin cable lead and heard sound from a radio mic for the first time but it was very quiet, once I've got sound working I can take it on a shoot at last. Maybe I need some other thing too but I don't want to spend much more than £500. Let me know if anyone can help.
I'm also looking into a cheap way round NDs / matte box (I have a 114 mm zoom lens), card reader, long battery power and stronger heavier duty tripod.
Thanks for your help if you do help. michaelgoring@mac.com

Why do you want to record sound on it, may I ask? I've never recorded sound on an Alexa; there's always a sound recordist doing that seperately. Hmm.

Well , because it theoretically can (?) - like to be a one man band where possible , but at least a guide track, open minded to other set up suggestions , thanks

Yes you can. But I don't know anyone who does and I'm not sure of what the audio quality is? The only time I've recorded in camera audio on a camera was because the director requested it as scratch audio on a Music Video. Wouldn't it be better to get a small audio recorder and record to that?

No idea about sound equipment. On the Alexa, if you go to the home screen there is a button for Audio, press that, then Options, then you can turn the sound off and on using the dial. There are two channels. Beyond that, I don't know.

The sound recording on the Alexa is pretty good. The camera doesn't have any preamps, so you need to feed it line level at the correct level for it to work. Normally a radio mic receiver should be able to do that, so have to checked they are both set to the same level?

Hi Michael.
As you know the Alexa was designed primarily for its picture quality so the audio side has been rather neglected. That said it does record at a very useable 24bit/48KHz.
Unlike other cameras the Alexa only takes LINE level inputs so I'm guessing that your radio mic isn't outputting at a high enough level. Try boasting the receiver output, failing that you'll have to use it through a mixer to boast the level.
If you want top keep it one man band try the Beachtek DXA-CINE as a mic amp.
Best of luck.
