Hospital Rooms

9 years, 9 months ago - Simon Fox

I'm working on a short film which has a scene set in a hospital room. Does anyone know of any hospitals in Scotland, or facilities that could easily double for a hospital room that we could hire out?
Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

Thanks for all the advice guys, really appreciate it. I got in touch with the Glasgow Film Office and they were tremendous help! Getting in touch with the contacts they've given me so fingers crossed.

It's not Scotland but...

...The old Wimbledon Studios had a hospital set, I believe. The studios are in transition with a new owner, but message me direct if you want contact details.
Good luck, Tony

Hi Simon
We've just been looking for a hospital in London for a short film and we've found a great venue in UCLH. We're renting a training room - it's set up exactly as a ward and is hired out by the day to doctors for training, so it's no problem at all for us to hire it for a few days for a film. Obviously that's not of direct use to you, but I thought I'd mention it in case you could find a similar hospital in Scotland with a training facility. Good luck!!

Hi Simon
I live in Glasgow and there are several hospitals that might be possible. People film at Stobhill hospital in the north of the city. Most of it is closed now I think hence people using it. Also the fabulous Victoria Infirmary on the south side of the city is just in the process of being closed down as everything moves to a 'superhospital' in Govan. You may be able to use either of the first two? Glasgow City council has a very successful Film Office and they should bee able to give you more advice. Kate

Hi Simon. You can turn any room into a hospital, with some well-placed props and some carefully-chosen angles. What kind of specific visuals does the script call for? Can you tell the story without a wide shot? You can probably pick creative angles that utilise the props and set design you can produce. These can suggest the setting, and maybe add to that with the sound design.

Last time I rented a dressed ward room, it was from a day hospital that closed at weekends (and was since demolished, unlucky!). That was nearly a decade ago, and cost over a grand back then. You might have more luck with renting some key props as above. Lab coat plus stethoscope plus badge equals doctor for under £15 on eBay, for instance.
