How crazy would it be to shoot videos with a compact ?

Hi all,

I am still in quest of the best equipment to travel and shoot portraits videos with.
I like the idea to be light and efficient but great quality.
How crazy would it be to shoot videos with a compact like the Panasonic LX100 or Fuji XT1 or Sony RX100 ?
Anyone has done it ? Is happy with it ?
The most important for me is to be grabbing easily images and the idea of not changing lenses all the time, having the camera always at reach sounds maybe like a tempting option !

Thank you for your kind help !

Merry christmas

Nora

Significantly less crazy than renting an Alexa and primes and lighting package with generator and being unable to travel at all. People will watch any technical quality if the material is good (95% of YouTube if you want evidence, or even 28 Days Later all shot DV). Being fast and flexible means you can catch material a large unit cannot.

Compacts have a narrow band of performance, good light (smaller sensors and cheaper glass tend to mean more sensor noise), static camera (rolling shutter jellocam effect - lightweight tripod is a must), steady movement in shots (so low bitrate AVCHD stands a chance), lit in camera (AVCHD doesn't grade terrible well, so get the best you can), record sound separately and sync in post (zoom handy h2 or similar probably OK if just out of shot). However, I'll bet an operator who understands the camera will get better results than an amateur with that Alexa and lighting package.

So long as you are sure that you'll be shooting within the sweet spot performance of the camera, and you're aware of the limits it imposes, then the trade off might be worth it. But only you can know...

It's not about the camera.
It's about the photographer.
But sometimes, it's about the lenses.
