INDEXHow do I find a composer for my feature-doc about Cannabis?
10 years, 6 months ago - Dale Beaumont-Brown
Hello, my name is Dale Beaumont-Brown and I am a documentary filmmaker.
I am about to enter into post-production on a feature-length documentary that I have been working on for 2 1/2 years. My intention is to have a combination of music/songs complemented by an original score.
I've never commissioned anyone to produce an original score for a feature doc before. I am looking for advice on how to achieve this; where to search for musicians/composers, who to talk to, which websites to use. Any personal recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.
The film is entitled Grassroots: The Cannabis Revolution, you can follow the link to the teaser trailer and social media pages below.
Many thanks,
Dale Beaumont-Brown

Many thanks for putting this up here Kim, and for taking the time to write this piece. I found your article very informative and made me think about things I haven't necessarily contemplated.
I'll take a look (rather a listen) at your work and get back to you.
Best regards,
Dale

I compose, create and produce soundtracks with contemporary instruments including the Chapman Stick. You can listen at www.davebowmer.com and see synchronised video examples on the Soundtracks page.

Hi Dale,
Sounds like a great project and it would be great to be involved. I'm currently working on a feature documentary which will be fjnishing up soon. My showreel's on my website: www.chrisroemusic.com/film-tv-theatre and there are more tracks up on my Soundcloud: www.soundcloud.com/cjr-music-media
Any ideas what type of musical approach you're after?
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Dale, the cost hinges entirely on the requirement, a string quartet remotely recording 30' of score in a dqy is a lot cheaper than a say 40pc orchestra recording 90' with an additional 20' choral, etc over a week. Just comparing like with like, make sure no matter what you get a full buyout on the recording (no onward fees whatsoever, no extra fees for using the score on another project, fully yours to keep and use as your own. I can save on just about any quote you get, but the bigger savings on the bigger recordings - and saving a third of £120k is worth saving, for instance!
The orchestra record film scores with an internationally respected conductor with some decent imdb Hollywood feature credits, also big-release video games and major touring artist backing tracks. You get all the same musicians and facilities of the national philharmonic and symphonic orchestras, but an unbranded price and modern approach. Unlike many UK players, they're not doing 2-3 sessions a week and having to live off that, they're doing 8-9 so cheaper per session but all living well. Everyone wins!
Anyway, please PM once you've got a score - same goes for anyone interested who's getting to that phase of the project. Costs from a few grand upto about £80k (for the full package including flights, transport, meals, hotels, exchange fees, buyout, quality studio, engineers, orchestration, copyists, translators, runners, mix of choir and orchestra, audio separation for remixes, stereo mixdown for work print, the lot). It's a bargain, compare like with like and you'll see!

You should take the time to decide what you want, and then find someone skillful. I'm a composermyself. If you have a budget I'll be willing to discuss it with you.

Hi Paddy, yes it would be a paid gig, this goes for everybody applying. I'm not a believer in professional work going unpaid.
I will be launching a Kickstarter campaign in April, a portion of which will be allocated to the original score. It would help me greatly to know a ballpark figure I need to put aside for such a job.
Can you send me more info on the orchestra in Prague, other composers and what they would cost?
Best regards,
Dale

Hi Dale, are you expecting to pay for the score or hoping for a freebie? I can point you towards specialist composers who do this stuff for a living, they'll work with you to develop a score to drive the emotional beats of your narrative.
If you want added production value, I represent a Prague-based professional orchestra who record a lot of film, game, tour backing, TV etc scores. They are massively cheaper than recording in the UK, you get a fully recorded, full buyout, no royalty tape at the end of it, quality is world class.

I would recommend talking to Dr. Hans Hess at www.hanshessmusic.com . I was very pleased with the score he did for my short Fled.
